Tanzania Vice President, Dr. Ali Mohamed Shein made an impromtu tour of Dar es Salaam markets to check out alleged increases of prices of food stuffs in the city by traders during the Holy month of Ramadhan.
Ramadhan is an Islamic religious observance that takes place during the ninth month of the Islamic month when the Qur’an (holy book of Islam) was revealed. Islam is a major religion in East Africa with a following of approximatly 12.1% of the population in Uganda, 10% in Kenya, 4.6% in Rwanda and 35% on the Tanzania mainland.
Unscroupulous traders are known to hike prices of food during Ramadhan to cash in on the increased expenditure on food.
